To Tell the Truth: GERSON WITTE

The Boys from Brazil are back!
I'm trying something different during this phase of the moon and scheduling BBWW Blog posts ahead of time so that you have something fresh to look at every day until I run out of BBWW stock, which I hope NEVER happens, but I do have a lot of submissions that go back a year - sorry out there, but it's in a good place--trust!

It's really good to see my Brazilian cartoonist friend Gerson Witte who returns with another great piece, with a BBWW that doesn't look like the last ones - one of my favorite thing about this project is when great repeaters like Gerson, or Mike Manley, or my pal Rick DBA ARKONBEY piles on this art, each one is in a different style than the last. Also, a new Label - "Rope Tricks" - signifying BBWW's that art prominently showcasing their magic lassos. One of these days I'll go back and fix old posts where there's that going on.

Really enjoy this look, and love the cartooning involved. Go visit Gerson's site on the world wide web - and I do mean WORLD, when you're sending in art from Brazil!

Bound to Happen: ARIE MONROE

As a person gifted with sight, it's hard for me to not pay attention to great cartoonists plying their trade on the internet. I don't spend hours online looking for art but when I run across something I like, I make a note of it and try to return to it later.

I noticed the hustle of Arie Monroe a few years ago and thought that if I ever got the chance, I'd ask her to submit a BBWW because I love her style and thought she'd be a good sport about it. Come to find out that she did one on her own without me asking! (or did I ask and forget? Could be - I'm getting old...) But here is a great cartoon of a BBWW who's in a bit of a pickle.

Arie is a great animator and cartoonist, and you should go park your face on her blog and check out her work - she's always drawing and that's one of the greatest treats there is to behold.

My new good friend Chico Felix, all the way from my favorite place, Brazil, dropped this off to me some time ago and I'm finally putting this up - a great black/white style which really puts me in the frame of reference of a Peter Bagge with a touch of Crumb put in for good measure.

I haven't had a lot of BBWW submissions lately that suggest the amazon in a surly light, but I have to say I really dig the sailor tat and disposition which gives off a different type of self-awareness? It's still there and powerful. That's really saying something. I love Chico's line, and the callout on the blue tattoo speaks out as well!

Thank You Come Again: MEGAN KELLY

When I first started this blog, some 3 or so years ago (is it 4 now? I can't remember) I used to see a lot of responses to this site that tried to color me as some fetishist or some creepy dude who has nothing else going on but collecting pictures of wonder woman. What's true is that I love the interesting conversation that happens when you ask cartoonists to interpret their idea of what a big wonder woman is. Every artist comes at this in a different way - add on to this if they're from OUTSIDE of the USA, add to that if they're a minority of any sort, etc. The dial keeps spinning and THAT'S what I find so interesting about the BBWW. Take what some people consider the 'ideal' symbol of femininity, and an icon of America, and strength and beauty, and blah blah blah. So now what happens if she's not wearing a size 2 outfit? Does any of that warp? Is it now funny? Or empowering? What do YOU see when you look at these images?

Stepping off the soapbox, what I see right here is a great illustration from storyboard artist/cartoonist Megan Kelly, who has a GREAT sense of character and I love what she's come up with here. And if I'm guilty of loving anything too much - I adore me some invisible planes.

So you all know my good pal MIKE HAWTHORNE, of the comics? Yes. You DO know him. You've marveled at his work for years and wonder how you can get your hands on MORE of it. I was lucky enough to check the inbox and find this beauty waiting inside!

Mike knows how to draw - PERIOD. And when Mike feels the need for speed, he burns off stuff like this, just because! Also, Mike is a repeat offender on the blog, possibly doing one of the first sketches in my now infamous BBWW sketchbook.

Right now Mike is open for commissions - you'd kick yourself if you don't get on his list. Hell - I may kick you if you don't!

Here's another of my pals that I want you to meet: He is supertalent Rico Renzi. You have probably seen Rico's artwork in or on comics all across comic-dom, so look for his name! He's a great artist with a remarkable eye for color. Rico was nice enough to submit these two hand-painted BBWWs for the blog - I love traditionally painted art!

Beyond the cuteness of Rico's figures, there's something melancholy about them that makes me keep re-arranging the order I want to view them - a perfect subject for discussion for the BBWW Curator (me) to ponder over. What do you think?

How do I Look?: JOSH ELLINGSON

Josh Ellingson and I go WAY back. Josh and I met at a comics convention over ten years ago when we were first breaking in to the business, and he gave me some of his mini comics that were so ahead of their time, it stunned me that somebody so young (I think Josh is younger than me!) had such a firm grip on the artform. Since that time, Josh has done more comics, but focuses these days on illustration, design and getting props in galleries.

I asked Josh if he'd be into doing a BBWW, and he turned this over post-haste, and it's great, just as I expected.

Illustrator Arthur de Pins is an artists' artist, and always draws big "Ooooooo's" everytime I link friends to his work. His remarkable style is very euro, something that I wish American cartoonists picked up on more. Mr. De Pins work speaks for itself.

Wonderous Fandom: SAM HATMAKER

Hey all!

In my attempt to start posting more regularly, I'm going to start posting more regularly. On to it!

In the vault is an awesome look at Sam Hatmaker, another new pal and creative who has amassed one of the largest (if THE largest) WW collection in existence. He wrote in and sent me a bunch of stuff to marvel at, especially this mod of Spencer Davis' amazing BOOTY BABES sculptures that you've probably seen (Which I like alot and would love to own one of, hint), but Sam has retooled into a VERY cool BBWW concept.

Also, Sam sent in some cool drawn art as well, which I swore I've seen before - as I've said, I lost some BBWW art before in an email crash, that I wish I could recover, perhaps this is one of them. Nice!

Still busy as ever, but I wanted to send over some more BBWW art that has been in the vault, just waiting for the right time.

I got this jewel from super-talented illustrator Ben Hutchings, who just happens to reside in Melbourne, Australia. The BBWW is indeed, GLOBAL.

I'm a huge R. Crumb fan, and I can't not feel the inspiration for this piece. Love the linework and the subtle clouds in the background - The worms-eye view of the figure gives you a few things to think about, yes?

My good friend, artist Austin Lee, co-runner of my favorite Philly gallery space the Exclamation Gallery, painted this BBWW for me as a gift-slash-art piece in a recent art show that I participated in last summer.

Hey gang!

Hope everyone is well. Here in the states, we're wayyyyy into the new year already, and I have no idea where the time has gone sofar. Wanted to share some BBWW stuff with you, and I'm pretty behind so Ill keep it moving.

My Xmas gift from one of my bestest pals on this marble happens to be comics artist extraordinaire and the winner of your hearts and minds, Mike Manley. Mike created an awesome BBWW in oil and gave it to me for Xmas2008 and it has a home on my studio wall. How cool is that?

The year is almost over, and as I have some time in the studio before zaniness begins over here, I wanted to start clearing the decks of cool BBWW submissions I've gotten in the past few months. Here's a cutiepie from my new pal Paul Hajj, who warms away the winter chill with this great cartoony submission, always on the move. I love the hair on this one the most, but the whole piece shines.

I got this submission a little while ago from another local Philly cartoonist, my new pal Mo Moussa, and this came out guns blazing - and standing on top of a dessert pastry.

A lot of really really superbly rendered submissions lately - keep them up! This is great. I love all the submissions I post, and my job as curator is to follow the mood and put things up at the right time. This is the right time for this! On top of the cartooning, I love this BBWW's attitude. That's so Philly!

What's up you guys?

I got a chance to take a breath here in the studio before the beginning of the Holiday Scramble here in the states, so I reached into the BBWW vault to bless you with another submission, this time from my new pal William Blankenship. Liking that cartooniness William brings to it - and those summer teeth are awesome!

We see ol' Wondy putting her wondersuit through the paces, and it lost. I haven't gotten a lot of busted-out BBWW's lately, but like I said, the submission prereqs are pretty low - draw a BBWW - if I think it's dope, you get put on. That's pretty much it. Life isn't always gorgeous!

ALSO! There's a lot of people in my que who have submitted - I plan on putting more up in smaller time windows than I have last season, so just keep an eye out.

You may remember last year, where I shone a spotlight on Parisian artist David Gouny, who is constantly making noise in the streets of Paris with his wheat-paste images of large women, which some call graffiti, others may call advertisement, or mind-floss - I call it a little bit of all the above. One of Davids' deals is to tell the masses that there are different shades of beauty in the world, and I love the approach.

To Con or Not to Con: TINA KUGLER

What's up party people!

Your fearless leader here, who's been a bit under the weather, as of late. A few weeks ago, I was a guest at my favorite comic book convention, the Baltimore Comic Con, and I got what we call in the business, Con Rot.

Yeah, that sounds nasty, and I believe Kurtz made it up, but it's pretty nasty. It's nothing but a cold from gtoo many germs, too many rounds of shaking hands, and probably a low immunity by not going to bed like you should because you're up being 'on' at the show.

Well anyway, I haven't shaken it still, and have added to the stock price of Kleenex for the past two weeks.

Speaking of Con sickness, I got another great post-it sketch from our good friend and Repeat Offender, Tina Kugler, who shows, rather than tells, why she doesn't enjoy the Con Season so much.

She admitted it was a tade late, but baby - I'm not keeping count. We do this when we can! Thanks as usual to Tina. I can't get enough of these.

Man, if I was counting, I may have to say that the artists submitting from Brazil may be giving us Americans a run for our money!

A very patient Camila Picheco, my new friend from Brazil presented this great, elegant-lined BBWW for our perusal, and I placed it in here as I settle more into my role as BBWW Curator, putting the images in an order that makes artistic sense to me. Also, because I couldn't wait any longer to post this!

Some may say she's not so bad - and hey, the beauty of this blog is that whatever the artist submits is what it is - IS she big? Maybe, maybe not. The art is great, and I'd love to see more of it. I especially love the very singular color pallette. It's like a breath of air to see art that's not all 'plastic and shiny' as Manley calls it, full of over-modeled tones.

What I'm loving about this one is the linework - which is so clean I could eat off of it, and the uncanny way that all of Mikes pieces ALWAYS look different from each other. Just great draftsmanship. . .

Mike's always winning, and I think this may be the 6th or 7th BBWW he's done, and this was from one of his daily warmup sessions. MAN, if my finished work looked like Mike's warmups. . . At this rate, I think Mike gets a green Masters jacket from me - or at least a Members' Only jacket!

Well well well looky here! The hits keep coming here on the BBWW Blog, as we just have a pretty cool anniversary, and now look at what my new pal Kevin Levell sent in! Another international art submission, which once again shows how great the internet can be when used for good vs. evil.

Going along with the theme inside a meme (I hate the phrase meme, trulyI do) Kev Lev sends in a beauty from the UK with covergirl status! I've been getting so many 'cover' pieces, I'll create a new label for them, just so you can locate them easier.

Kevin really shines on this piece, and I have to say I wasn't familiar with his work before, but I'm a fan now! Really fine lines and a great pose - that's good cartooning at play.

The blog celebrates its 1st anniversary, as it stands, this is the borndate for the BBWW Blog, June 21st, 2006. Man, don't worry about the grey hair! It's dignifying. Harrumph.

I'll keep it short and sweet, as I owe it to oldschooler Matthew Melis to put up his crazy good BBWW from LAST year, when I lost it in the sauce during the BBWWBash last time. Still awesome!

As alot of you may know, my great great friend Mike Wieringo passed away suddenly last summer, and man, I can't explain how much wind has been taken out of my, and a lot of my cartoonist pals, sails. I remember reading somewhere about the BBWW(Blog) where some guy came to the conclusion that I couldn't POSSIBLY know all of these artists. Well, some of the artists showcased here are pals through the virtual, as we are all kinda kin through our craft, though we may have never met, and others I share the same bond with, AND have the pleasure of having in my life as good-honest-to-betsey friends.

'Ringo was one of those. I don't wanna go down the sobby road today, but I still have Mikes' phone numbers programmed in my cellphone because I can't part with erasing them. He was a very dear, close friend of mine and I still miss him every day.

Mikes' amazing family has come together to create a scholarship in his name to honor him, continue his legacy, and help out the new guard, and I am very excited to be able to help out with this, any way they see fit to use me. Read below for the (kinda outdated) press release, where the kernels of the scholarship will kick off this weekend at Heroes Con here in the states.

I'll be writing something else about Mike next week, as his birthday is coming up. Sorry if you were just looking for fat WW to gawk at, but sometimes we have to change gears around here. Thanks for your eye-time.

CHARLOTTE, NC (June 16, 2008) When Mike Wieringo abruptly passed away last August, the comics industry lost more than a great artist and creator – it lost a friend. Now, Mike’s family has teamed with the Savannah College of Art and Design to create The Mike Wieringo Scholarship or “The ‘Ringo” to help keep his spirit of generosity alive.

Created by Mike’s brother Matt and his sister-in-law Suzanne, the ‘Ringo is designed to help provide similar help to artists at the Savannah College of Art and Design or SCAD. Domestic and international students with have a minimum 3.0 grade point average who demonstrate financial need and display a serious interest in pursuing comics as a career are eligible. The scholarship will take effect in the artist’s second year of classes, and is renewable for up to two additional years, provided the student continues to meet the criteria.

The recipient will be chosen from three finalists determined by the college in a portfolio review by Matt and Suzanne Wieringo, along with a rotating group. The ultimate goal for the ‘Ringo is to raise enough funds so that it can cover a full year’s expenses at SCAD, approximately $30,000.

Toward this end, a table staffed by Mike’s family and friends will be set up in his traditional spot in Artists Alley at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC. Heroes was a big part of Mike’s life and career, and was the industry event he most looked forward to every year.

The table will raise funds through donations and the sale of remaining copies of Mike’s sketchbooks, copies of comics featuring Mike’s work, selected pieces of Mike’s original artwork, sketches by Mike’s friends in the industry who will be appearing at the booth, and items donated by other comic professionals. Pros appearing include Jeff Parker, Rich Faber, Craig Rousseau, Todd Dezago, Mark Waid, Cully Hamner, Richard Case and more to be announced.

“SCAD is one of the most impressive programs in the world to focus on the medium of comics,” says Jeff Parker, creator of The Interman and Agents of Atlas, who worked with Mike at Artamus Studios. “I’m pretty sure Mike would have loved to have attended such a place in his student days. It would make an excellent legacy for him if we can grow the Ringo scholarship into a launch pad for the future greats of comics.”

Despite his success on such books as The Flash, Fantastic Four and his own creator-owned Tellos, Mike Wieringo never forgot what it was like to be a struggling creator. For many up-and-comers, Mike served as a mentor and friendly voice, whether it was providing free covers, advice, or just the encouragement to keep going.

With your help, the Mike Wieringo Scholarship can continue to grow and help a new generation of creators get the training and connections they need to start their careers. Mike’s talent, enthusiasm and generosity inspired many in the comics industry to be their best as both creators and as human beings. With your help, Mike will continue to be an inspiration for creators in decades to come.

Wait, you all know Derrick right? He's what we call here, a 'Repeat Offender', meaning that this isn't the first time we've showcased his BBWWs here. Make a banner for the BBWW

Anybody up to creating a banner for the blog? It can have art from the blog in it, fit the current theme (pinkish/reddish/purplish) but be tasteful and read well.

The font/text should be elegant.
Here's an example of something I'd be into: or this. Something clean. I hate noise!

The winning banner will be put up top for a year, get the credit, and will probably go live on June 21st, our second birthday!

Specs should be... whatever the banner up toppa here currently is, preferably a .GIF or .JPG. No moving parts, because that would be annoying.

I'll keep this open until June 14th. Or if nobody enters, forget, i'll do it myself.

As we enter into warmer (?) weather here in the States, the change of temperature guides your mind into taking into consideration other changes in our lives. Been away for some time, but I see that people are still checking out the blog, and I really appreciate that. Once in a while I stumble upon somebody commenting on what goes on around here, and usually they're totally off-base, but then the BBWWBoosters come out of the woodwork and break it down and explain how it really is! With that in mind, feast your eyes on one of the Modern Masters of the plus-sized form, my long-lost pal, the great Les Toil! I've been an admirer of Les' work for ages, and man, he just flat out does it like a Pro.

He was nice enough to grant us a fine BBWW study, and she's coming right outta the screen on you! Maybe if we all beg nicely, Les will give it his 'les-color' one of these days - but hey, I'll take what I can get! Man, I need to order some Les art for the studio myself. . .

What's Up!

The blogs' been on a little break, but here I am! Posting will be forthcoming and forthwith and that type of jazz.

I'm sure some of you may have stumbled upon my blog by the way of the INTERNET SUPERSTAR interview I did, and if you came and liked the ideals of the blog, thanks! If you just came to laugh and point, well, that's not very nice, is it?

Speaking of staring and pointing, my man Derrick Fish blesses me with a new piece with a BBWW and her sidekick (I'll leave the names up to you - I know who it is, but that's for somebody elses' blog) checking themselves out in a funhouse mirror. I like the message of this, and the look on WW's face says more than enough for you to get it. I'm pretty sure I remember an issue of WW where she goes to a funhouse and sees a fat reflection of herself and gets zapped into that or some other silliness, so that's a real interesting topic.

Now this wasn't made specifically for me, but rather a comission for a fan of Derricks, and he was nice enough to share with the class. MAN that's good line! Thanks bro!

Man, please somebody buy me a ticket to Brazil. I get the dopest art from there and have met a whole bunch of great artists from the BBWW Experience that I never would have seen otherwise. I hope through this you get exposed to other great art styles as well. One other part of this that is so great is that you get to see what's going through the minds of people not native to the states and how they perceive this character that is supposed to embody all of these American ideologies. Or not. It's all up to the artist! And that brings me to todays TWO-FER:

I come at you on a warm Wednesday with some BBWW art that's close and dear to my heart. My new pal Mark Moore who has been in the que for months finally gets dialed up, and I can't keep this work a secret! Mark busts out a great piece on kraft paper. I'm a booster of this style, as I do it in my own artwork from time to time. Also after checking out his art page, he even draws on paper bags like I do! Mark gives us all something to think about with a great line and a BWW with a low center of gravity. It's all good!

I'd love to see more of Mark's art here! You can go see his deviant art page to see some now! Let's ask Mark back again soon. I never talk about people's art styles, but something about Marks' gives me a vibe of mashup of Akira Toriyama and R. Crumb. Maybe I'm nuts.

As we enter a new year, I'm looking for going full-blast at projects, so the BBWW project is something I plan to put more time into as well, so look for more posts from me - I may start to do posts on a schedule, like every Monday Wednesday and Friday, to give some structure to the blog. Something to think about. For now, enjoy the Last BBWW of 2007, and how apprapo, that it would be from Das Wunderkind of the blog, my great pal Mike Manley, and OH! Surprise! it's by Mike and his fiance, the beautiful ECHO! I don't know where Echo starts and Mike Stops in this one, but that's a great thing for a couple - they make a great duo. As you all know by now, one of my bestest pals in the void is Mike Manley. We go way back, and if you are worth your salt as a comic book fan, you're familiar with his name, at the very least. Mike is a great friend of mine as well as someone I look up to artistically and a lot of other ways-cally.

Mike is tied to this whole BBWW thing and he goes further back in this silliness than you may know. Check the very first post, as I explain how we got here, and you'll see Mike's name.

Another thing you'll see here is a lot of Mike's BBWW drawings. He does these inbetween whatever 500 other things he's got going on, and just drops them on me. Like "Oh yeah, I just drew this, hereyago". And it's always A+ work! The pencil piece you see above is something Mike did in the summer, and somehow it got lost in the sauce. Triple A - Awesome As Always!

Speaking of grades, you should go read Mike's blog, and read about how his first semester back at art school is going. The guy amazes me. A great friend and a greater inspiration!

Fine Lines: KRIS DRESEN

Hey there! I come from the mountaintop, bearing goods aplenty. A cornucopia of dope art from great friends.

Kris Dresen is a famous cartoonist and personal friend of mine who has created a name for herself and is a world-renowned comicker, and has been nominated for so many awards, she doesn't even have to go to the events. I want to be like Kris!

I think for as long as I've known her, I've been bugging her in some way or another to come along for the ride in one of my hair-brained comic capers. "Hey, let's build a rocketship out of toilet paper cardboard and poptarts", etc. and she usually says 'sure'! But man, I didn't think she'd take me up on drawing a BBWW. I love this, and the line is awesome. . . that hair is awesome. Shee, it's all good!

I could look at Kris' linework all day, and she makes a col-erase pencil dance in her hand like it's no thing. I'm the biggest Kris Dresen fan, so you should be too. Check out her site and buy buy buy!

So I got a great email from our old pal Bill Hernandez who did a piece for the blog some time ago, trapped under a cartoonist roundup post (Which I'm probably going to have to do again - I have so many pics to post!) and look what I found inside!

What really struck me about this besides the great color sense is that it's just a strong, heroic image, and that's that. No filler or by-products needed. That's just awesome! Thanks Bill! Go check out more of his work.

"To me this is one of the top sites that I visted, I check it everytime I log on to see if there have been any updates for various reasons.

Most notabley because astounding artwork that is always on display here some of it's pretty funny but it's always beautiful.

Plus there's the concept of the character of Wonder woman herself, to me she represents beauty, grace and dignity, and see her in a larger form I think is a very good thing becuase in alot of the artwork she still shows those characteristics and I think it is very important to show that bigger girls can stand for the same things that the "little ones" are always shown."

So if you look to your right on the sidebar, you can see I installed a poll which expires at the end of the week. I want to know what you all think about putting more 'alternative' posts here on the BBWW blog. More specifically I'm thinking about posts like the one I just dropped on David Gouny (below) or Cosplayers dressed up as BBWW, or models in the same light, etc.

My mind is firmly entrenched on artists drawing images. Everything else I think skews the line for me, so I'm wondering what you think? Vote or drop a comment here so we can talk about it. We get over 300 hits a day here, so stop lurking and communicate already.

BATTING 100 THOUSAND! + Mike Manley!

Hey ya'll! So the other day, we crossed over the 100 Thousand unique visitors mark, and I'm very impressed and proud! I keep getting surprised by the outpouring of community and artistic kinship that has come from such a odd little theme. Guess we can't stop now!

I've been getting organized and am going to start compiling sketches I got a while ago and things that slipped through the cracks. I also am going to institute some polls and have some more weekly themes! Remember the Guest Roundup? I'm gonna bring that back. Also I'm planning on fun stuff from the original BBWW sketchbook - the place this all started. I still have sketches I haven't shared yet, so we're still in good shape.

To bring us out right, here's a little slippin' nip BBWW, konking some batty-guy in his cabbage. I don't know how I missed this, but your pal and mine, and holder of the BBWW sketch world title belt, Mike Manley gave me this in the middle of the summer, and somehow in the heat, I lost it in the sun. Ah yes, I can't tell you enough how much I enjoy artist Tina Kuglers' work. She is the newest in a long line of BBWW Blog Repeat Offenders, and her Post-it Notes style cartoons are so alive and full of life, she's killing me slowly.

Loving this style, as we see our BBWW going out on the town and running into some problems.

Tina shared with me that this image was made to resemble a post-it in corel painter! Crazy talk! She's definitely on to something. I think I'll read more of it here, and wow! How about here!

Whatta way to come home! Coming back from the bog, we have a repeat offender who's a fan-favorite, Gerson Witte, my pal checking in all the way from Brazil with another colorful piece, this time with a different style than the last, which made a lot of people stand up and take notice of the blog - The BBWW full of whimsy and playful cuteness.

This BBWW seems to have lost something. Loving the cartooning involved, as well as the bright colorwork. Gerson keeps bringing it - and I'm loving every second! Thanks!

What's up party people! Just to let you know we're getting close to 100K in unique visits, so that's pretty cool. Like I said before, I have a lotta pals who have blogs, webcomics, etc who probably clear that in a week, but that's not there. This is here, so there.

Up next is another good pal of mine, and one of the guys on my 'If I could eat his brains and get his talent' list, Dave Perillo. Dave is a great cartoonist and also a member of the Philadelphia Cartoonist Society, a group of cats and kittens who accepted my bribe and let me in their ranks.

Anyway, Dave is an awesome talent, and beyond doing awesome mini-color-prints of all types of cartoony goodness, is known for the very pro mini-comic LIL' SCAMP. Go check out Daves blog, and just . . . seriously, after you see Daves' work, you'll want to BUY BUY BUY! Lucky for you he has stuff for sale!

Love that WW - and I'm a sucker for the off-register coloring techniques. You did it again, Dave!

Mike Wieringo 1963-2007

I posted this elsewhere, but I had to put something up.

It came out today that one of my best friends in and out of comics, Mike Wieringo, passed away yesterday. He was 44.

It's really tough to read all the stuff about him all over the internet, but I'm glad - he was as I've always said, one of the sweetest human beings I've ever met, and I am honored and proud to have him as a friend. Nobody could ever say a bad word about him and no one ever will.

Mike put up with my crap, and loved anything I did, and he always had great, encouraging things to say about me and my work. He even drew two posts for this blog, and I never asked him for them - he loved to draw, and he loved to make people happy.

That's enough for now.

I'm already missing my buddy. Love you Mike.

Red, White, and You: BOBBY TIMONY

One thing I enjoy about this blog (along with the fact we just cleared 80,000 unique visits?) is that as word of this thing spreads, the more people see it, and it evokes some sort of emotion. I try not to rant about what I read regarding people's ideas/opinions about the blog, but 9 times out of ten, they're usually off-base. It's easy to take things out of context if you're reacting to an image somebody steals from here and throws up somewhere with the caption 'EWW LOOK! BLARF!', but really, all it takes is the gift of sight to figure out what the blog is about. Hell, read the sidebar.

So for every four derogatory snipe I read, I see at least one who gets it. At the end of the day, that's up to you to figure out, isn't it? I got submissions to post so I'll stop the rant.

Out of the fog, I come, bringing gifts of Bobby Timony, my pal who I met at SPX 2005, and who is a cartoonist on his way. I like this BBWW, and really dig the linework. Thanks Bro!

This masterful BBWW submission got buried in my inbox, and the artist, my new best pal Chrissie Altese, was nice enough to tell me (twice) that. That's my B - I'm only human, but a promise is a promise, and how could I keep beautiful work like this to myself?!

Chrissie said this was done in Freehand and finished in Photoshop, and man, that's what's up! I don't know a ot of people who use Freehand, but I'll put her in the list of those who know what they're doing (Also, peep the W's on the background)!

Also, if you go to her blog, you'll see more of her great art - I love the loose sketches. Being a process junkie, I can't get enough of seeing those lines.

I See London I See France: MIKE MANLEY

There's a few things in life that are certain: After a male turns 25, he can't really digest a Big Mac like he used to; death, taxes and my buddy Mike Manley, who won't stop blessing us with BBWW art!

At this point, I can't call what we're getting sketches anymore - I mean, come on. I also hope that all of these stop people from wanting to submit - the crazier this art gets, it looks like I'm getting less and less submissions. Don't fear! Send in that art!

With that said, if it seems like Mike's always drawing these, is because Mike is always drawing. ALWAYS. I know a lot of cartoonists, but I also know a lot of cartoonists who do a lot of not drawing cartoons. Mike is NOT one of those. I mean, he even has a magazine, dedicated to drawing comics and cartooning.

Go visit Mike at the blog, and see what's on his plate this month - it's always great! Thanks again, Mike!

YO! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!

The little blog that goes 'what?!' has survived a year on the internerds, and I couldn't be prouder. A little side-thing of my just posting scand from a theme sketchbook has turned into an international darling! That's just dripping with awesomesauce.

The "BBWW w/ Cake" theme was successful, as in that somebody actually did it, and man, what entries they were! Here's the last one, posted above by my new pal Nele Moeys!

So, my good pal Jim Bradshaw, representing Sugar Frosted Goodness sent this in a little while ago, and then when he didn't see it, he wondered if he offended me.

No way, man! Everybody's entries are their own, and as long as it's not dirty, I don't care what you do. The fun thing again about this 'project' I guess, is just to see what people come up with. Like I've said in the past, once in a while I'll get howls from the trees about the blog in particular - but all I'm doing is collecting and posting them. Each artist comes to the table with their own idea - all I've ever asked for was a BBWW. The artist mind does the rest of the work.

Anyway, I really love this technique, and the cartoon line I'm a real big fan of. I'll have to ask Jim how he did this! Thanks Jim!

If you have eyes, and you logged on to the internet, then you know who Mike Krahulik is, better known as 'Gabe' from 'Gabe & Tycho' or better yet Penny Arcade.

Mike is a good pal of mine, and WOAH MAN was I surprised when i saw this birthday blog surprise in my inbox! I've watched Mike's style really firm up and evolve, and his color sense is top-notch. I love the squash/stretch in his work, so needless to say, I'm a big mark for Mike's stuff.

Okay. I just had to post this before I turned off the internets!

My new new new friend Tina floated this into my box, and - where can I start?

First, INVISIBLE CAR.

Second, Those thighs are awesome!

Third, Baby. HA!

Tina is an illustrator and storyboard artist on probably something you've watched. I love her style, and can see the fluidity in her drawing in just this one sketch. That's good stuff right there! Go check out her blog - and I think I'm going to go back and look again! I also love her 'finding a job' boardgame.
